Happy New Year

Happy New Year 2012!!

This year's beginning is a memorable one. One of my best friends from Malaysia stayed my grandfather's house. We ate Temaki Zushi(Hand-roll sushi), Osechi(New Year's Food), Zoni(New Year's Soup with Sticky Rice), Hot pod and so on and talk about the cultural difference between Malaysia and Japan. My family was very conscious at first but later they also tried to communicate with him. I was really happy that my family warmly accepted him because it's a kinda closed family.

We also went to Sanju-Sangendo(三十三間堂), Kiyomizu temple(清水寺), and Ginkakuji temple(銀閣寺) at Kyoto. Mt.Yoshino(吉野山), Kimpusenji temple(金峯山寺), Yoshino Jingu Shrine(吉野神宮) at Yoshino. And finally Kofukuji temple(興福寺), Todaiji temple(東大寺), Nara park(奈良公園), Gangoji temple(元興寺), and Naramachi(奈良町). I think he is the first Malaysian guy who came all the way to Kimpusenji Temple. It's happy for me to let him know how important the forestry is in Yoshino. Someday I hope I can discuss the issue with him deeply.

On the last day, we went to the VIVRE, Japanese department store, to check the Fukubukuro(福袋), the lucky bag. He was so surprised the cheapness of the Fukubukuro. As I've never bought the bag, I wanted to try one but I couldn't find the good size!! So sad. Next year! Later we spend 3 hours in internet cafe because he wants to use internet. It was good experience to stay there  since I've been there only once.

Although the night bus he took was late, he safely get back to home in Yokohama. I hope next year also he can visit my house and I can visit him on Chinese New Year and see how different it is.

May everyone have a fruitful year ahead!!

Basics of Japanese Forest

Let's get it started!
Oh, before anything, as I have no experience of writing, please be patient even if the composition is difficult.

At first, I will show you the very basic data.
Japanese land area is about 380,000 m2.
66% of it is covered from the forest, which is the second highest percentage in the world.
Japanese precipitation, humidity, temperature and soil are easy for trees to grow.
So naturally the land becomes the forest if no one takes care of the land.
Japan is long vertically and holizontally. So we have many vegetation place by place.
(Like the plant in Hokkaido is different from those in the main land)
Natural forest has Oak, Beech, Maple or Birch(Normally broadleaf/evergreen tree grows in the south and coniferous/deciduous grows in the north.)

40% of whole forest is artificial.
The main species are Japanese Cedar, Cypress, Pine, and so on.

30% of whole forest is owned by Japnaese government.
Big companies like Toyota, Mitsui Bussan, Oji Paper, Nihon Paper, Asahi Beer, Sumitomo Forestry have more than 40,000 ha of the forest (maybe).
But mainly forest is divided by so many small owners.

The annual comsumption of timber per Japanese person is between 0.8 and 1.0 m3.
The main ways to use timber in Japan are the construction materials and the paper.

Many things are left to write down but this is enough for today!

Getting started the blog!

Dear Firends,

I finally started the blog. I will try to write in English but sometimes I will use Japanese as well.

I want to write down mainly about Forestry Problems, Timber Usage, Japanese Culture, and the Life of Japanese people. I am interested in the reactivation of Japanese rural area. And because I've studied about Japanese forestry and timber construcion, in my university and graduate school, respectively, I want to share my idea with many people. Sometimes I also want to write down about myself, my idea or my life. I will do it slowly day by day as I don't have so much time.

As for forestry, I want to make this blog as a platform or discussion board to communicate with many people who's interested in the forest/environment/sustainablity matters. I won't make the contents too professional so that everyone who reads this blog can understand them. And if someone realises mistakes in the contents, the correction would be really welcomed.

One thing I'd like to keep you mind is that I hope everyone to know that each idea has right and wrong aspect at the same time. Please do not just make a critical comment but let's share the positive idea.

Please contact me freely to akipos07@gmail.com whenever you want. I will try to reply as many as possible.  I really appreciate you if you can correct my English or teach me many expressions.
